- BUCKETS is a sorting game. Each of its puzzles--which
- range in difficulty from child's play to diabolical--consists
- of a set of words and two or three buckets. The object is
- simply to figure out which words go with which and drop them
- into the buckets accordingly. There will be either two or
- three groupings, depending upon whether there are two or three
- buckets. It doesn't matter which bucket you use for which
- group, as long as all of the words you put in each bucket
- belong together.
-
- PLAYING: Drag each word to the bucket into which you
- want to drop it by holding either button down while moving
- the mouse. When you release the button, the word will fall.
- (You can rest a word on the bottom of the screen or the lip
- of a bucket if you're not ready to drop it into a bucket yet.)
- After you drop the last word into a bucket, your solution
- will be checked. If you're right--if you've sorted things
- correctly--the labels for the buckets will be revealed, and
- you'll be allowed to go on to the next puzzle. But if you're
- wrong, a point will be subtracted from your score (you start
- with 5 points in each puzzle). You can then move words around
- to try a different solution. But remember: Each time you drop
- the *last* word into a bucket, you will lose a point if your
- solution is incorrect. If your score reaches 0, the screen
- will be erased and you will be given a choice between 1) trying
- the puzzle again, 2) seeing the correct solution, or 3)
- quitting. If you choose to give up and see the solution,
- you'll be allowed to go to the next puzzle afterward.
-
- HINTS: There are two kinds of hints in BUCKETS. In
- certain puzzles, hints are automatically given at the begin-
- ning to keep you from making a sorting that is reasonable but
- not the one that BUCKETS has in its database. Two or more
- words will be dropped into the same bucket or different ones,
- indicating that they go together or apart. These words cannot
- be moved.
- In addition to automatic hints, you can *request* up to
- three hints in a puzzle, but each one will cost you a point.
- However, BUCKETS will limit you to two or even one hint if
- getting more would bring your score down to zero, since a
- puzzle ends if your score reaches zero. To request a hint,
- click on the "HINT" icon at the top of the screen. Two
- randomly chosen words will be highlighted--if they are
- surrounded by the same color, they belong together; if
- different colors are used, they don't. Click a button or
- press a key to return to play. If you use all three hints,
- or if your score gets down to 1 for any reason, the "HINT"
- icon will disappear.
- TIME: To add some tension to the game, you can choose
- how much time will be allowed for solving a puzzle: Plenty
- (4 minutes), Enough (90 seconds), or Forget About It! (30
- seconds). Or, if tension isn't your idea of fun, you can
- choose Forever (about 9 hours, actually). During play, a
- "time column" at the edge of the screen will indicate graph-
- ically how much time is remaining. If the puzzle isn't solved
- when time runs out, the screen will be erased and you'll be
- given the choice between trying again, seeing the solution,
- or quitting.
-
- COLORS: The colors of the buckets and words change
- from puzzle to puzzle, but this is for decorative purposes
- only.
-
- ENTERING YOUR NAME: BUCKETS keeps a record for each
- player of the last puzzle they solved so that it will know
- which puzzle to present the next time they play. When a
- player has solved all the puzzles in the database, the first
- one will be presented again.
-
- QUITTING: Click on the "QUIT" icon to leave
- BUCKETS.
-
- OPENING SCREEN: Once you've entered your name and made
- your choice of time, you can skip the opening-screen animation
- by pressing any key.
